Day 02 San
Pedro de Atacama - Altiplanic Lagoons and Salt Lakes
Breakfast. Departure from San Pedro, following the international route to Sico border pass, to the south. Our first stop will be at Toconao village, to see its houses built in Liparita stones, and the church of San Lucas. Then we will continue to the Atacama Salt lake. The salt flat encompasses 3,000 km² (1,864.11 mi²), is about 100 km (62.14 mi) long and 80 km (49.71 mi) wide, which makes it third largest in the world, after Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and Salt Lake in USA . Its average elevation is about 2,300 m.a.s.l. The topography of the core portion of the salar exhibits a high level of roughness, which is due to that the surface of this area is permanently free of water, unlike the most of the other salt flats, as for example the Salar de Uyuni, which is periodically covered with shallow water. It receives filtered water from the San Pedro river and multiple canyons of the high mountain range and it is surrounded by mountains and has no drainage outlets. To the east is enclosed by the main chain of the Andes while to the west lies a secondary mountain range called Cordillera de Domeyko. Under the surface is a big lake and from this salted and mineral water has born a new miner of salts mixture. It has the biggest reserve of Litio, Borax and Potassium in the world. In this salt lake is located the Chaxa lagoon, which has impressive salt formations, lagoons with superficial salt in formation and an exceptional animal life of little reptiles and the magnificent pink flamingoes (parinas). This place is a reserve under protection of the National Corporation for the forest (CONAF) as a birds nest centre. Afterwards we will continue toward the Miscanti and Meñiques lagoons. Located at 4,500 m. high, these lagoons are surrounded by impressive volcanoes, originated from the rising of the Andes, in the ancient geological times. They get their underground waters from thaw. Arrival to San Pedro at 17.30 hrs. Back to your Hotel.

Pedro de Atacama Puritama Thermal Springs and Guatin Gorge - Calama -
Santiago
Breakfast. Departure at 9.00 a.m. from San Pedro, following the route to the northeast, in 20 minutes we will arrive to Guatin’s gorge, to start walking following the river. This canyon is full of big cactus and a green spot in the middle of the desert. There are many birds and small flowers in spring and summer. After the trip of around 1.5 hours we will visit the Puritama Thermal Springs, a series of eight large pools of water with a temperature of 33.5º C (92º F). The pools are situated in the Atacama Desert, at an altitude of 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) above sea level. Wooden walkways connect the eight pools so that visitors can easily reach them. The pools also have facilities for enjoying the many properties of these thermal waters, as members of the ancient Atacameño culture have done for centuries.
